Scindia calls for action against those responsible for tragedy

Union Minister of State for Power Jyotiraditya Scindia on Monday demanded action against those who are responsible for stampede near Ratangarh temple.

As many as 115 people were killed and over 100 injured in the stampede near the temple on Sunday following a rumour that a river bridge that the devotees were crossing was about to collapse.

Alleging that setting up of an inquiry commission by the State Government was a mere facade, Scindia told reporters here after visiting the stampede site, “I am sure that nothing will come out from the inquiry commission which has been promised by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.” He said that the time has come for Chouhan to take immediate action against those responsible for Sunday's tragedy.

Scindia said that the Congress does not wish to politicise the tragedy but there are questions that the BJP certainly needs to answer as its Government failed to protect the pilgrims especially when the saffron boasts of Hindutva torch bearer. Moreover, similar tragedy happened at the same site six years back and at that time also judicial enquiry was ordered but no action was taken.

A similar incident had taken place in 2006 at Ratangarh and then too a judicial commission had been set up, said Scindia, who is the chairman of Madhya Pradesh Congress Poll Campaign Committee.

No action had been taken on the basis of the report of the judicial commission then, he said, while expressing apprehension that the same thing may happen again.

Scindia said he was surprised that a large number of vehicles had been allowed entry into Ratangarh despite model code of conduct being in force in the poll-bound State.
