A Hindi play narrating the life span of Savitribai Phule ‘Savitri’ was staged brilliantly at Shaheed Bhavan Auditorium on Wednesday. Marking the first day of Deshraag Theatre Festival, the play was spectacularly staged.

Directed by a renowned theatre artist and playwright of the city KG Trivedi, the play Savitri was wondrously performed by the artists of Trikarshi theatre troupe, Bhopal.

“Savitribai was like a storm. She broke all the stereotyped mentality and fearlessly worked for the society. To pay her a tribute on her birth anniversary, we staged this play,” said the director of the play KG Trivedi.

Starting from the birth of Savitribai Phule i.e. January 3 1831, till her death on March 10, 1897, all the major incidents were minutely showcased in the play.

Set at the backdrop of 19th century, the play dealt with the daily life incidents of Savitribai Phule. She was the wife of Jyotirao Phule. Both of them worked a lot for the upliftment of the Dalits and marginalized women. She was the first teachers at the native school for girls at Pune.

In one of the memorable episodes, the artists on stage showed that how Savitribai was forced to work for the upliftment of women and their education. Everyday Savitribai’s husband Jyotirao would read out to her what he was reading and this way, Savitribai learned and was educated.

The play was much appreciated by the audience as it showcased beautifully the lifespan of the lady teacher that broke the entire stereotypes.
