Sadhvi Pragya on fast, health worsens

Published on:

Hindu activist Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, who recently got a clean chit from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the 2008 Malegaon blasts case, continued her fast unto death on the second day today to press for her demand for being allowed to take a dip in the Kshipra during the ongoing Simhasth Kumbh Mahaparv Mela in ancient temple town Ujjain.

Her  health condition deteriorated on Tuesday since she started a hunger strike to demand that she be allowed to go to Ujjain for the ongoing Simhasth Kumbh.

Sadhvi Pragya began an indefinite hunger strike last Monday to press her demand that she be allowed to take a dip in Shipra river at Ujjain during the ongoing Simhasth Kumbh. The authorities were not allowing her to travel to Ujjain on security grounds, she alleged.

Pragya, who was in Bhopal Central Jail, has now been shifted to the Pandit Khushilal Sharma Ayurveda Hospital in Bhopal for treatment.

According to Sadhvi Pragya's aides, her condition has gone from bad to worse.

She is weak and her blood pressure has dipped below normal, her aides said and have taken up the matter with Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Babulal Gaur.

In a letter to the President and the Prime Minister, the Sadhvi has threatened to fast unto death if her demands are not met by May 21.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in a statement said that Sadhvi Pragya can attend the Kumbh mela only if her security concerns are met.

Sources said that the Sadhvi, who is undergoing treatment at an Ayurvedic hospital here, has been under judicial custody now. She was granted permission by a trial court on May 4 to visit Simhasth.

According to hospital sources, the Sadhvi's glucose level was reducing and her condition was deteriorating due to fasting. However, the administration expressed inability to take her to Ujjaing citing security reasons.

The Sadhvi's health was already deteriorating and the fasting could land her in more danger, the sources said.

Sadhvi Pragya sought permission for the first time to visit Kumbh after her name figured in the case.

Several people were killed during twin blasts in Malegaon on September 21, 2008. The NIA is investigating into the case. Sadhvi Pragya Thakur was accused of hatching the conspiracy for the blasts. She was arrested in October 2008.

The Simhasth Kumbh Mela in Ujjain commenced on April 22 and will end on

May 21.
