In a case related to sexual assault on a 10th standard student by a teacher in Balaghat, the Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC) has recommended compensation of Rs two lakh to be deposited in the name of the victim. The MPHRC also recommended formation of a separate scheme for such cases.

In its recommendations, the Commission said that due to the incident of rape, the victim has lost one academic year and also has gone through physical and mental trauma for which the Government must deposit an amount of Rs two lakh for her future, as compensation.

The Commission also said that this amount will be separate from the MP Crime Victim Compensation scheme, 2015.

The Commission also said that in the first place such incidents should not take place in a civilized society, but if it happens, then there must be a separate scheme for the victims, so that can the victims get compensated immediately; let the victim be of any section of the society, he added.

The commission in its recommendation also specified that like the ‘ladli lakshmi Scheme’ to ensure a bright future for girls, a functional scheme must be made for the rape victims by the government. Notably, there is no scheme for the rape victims at present.

In the light of education, treatment and the future of rape victims, a scheme must be formed by the government, the commission stated in its recommendation. The MPHRC has made similar recommendations in the past too.
