Roa: Dharma is applicable but according to current situation

Gandhi’s dharma is the best example as it could be applied to every aspect of professional and personal life. He had always emphasised on duties rather than rights which could be termed as dhrama, told Chancellor of Gitam University Professor KR Roa at the International Conference on Dharma — Dhamma here on Saturday.

While talking to The Pioneer Rao told that dharma is contextualised in every set of conditions. In every condition, principles remain the same but the practices of following these principles change according to the needs.

So dharma is applicable in every set of conditions and in the current scenario dharma is applicable but according to the current situation. There is difference between Actual and Ideal and Dharma provides the strength to differentiate the difference between the two, he added.

Professor of Purushottama Bilimoria, Associate Professor, Deakin University, Australia emphasised on the virtue ethics model in the Indian context as the individualistic approach has lead to the deterioration in the betterment and support of the community. There is need to revive virtues of West and East for a better virtue ethic.

“Our country is still in colonial phase and has endorsed the materialistic nature due to which there is urgent need of adopting of virtue ethics as it will save the society and community which has lost their values,” he added.

In-charge of Sanchi Buddhist-Indic Studies Rajesh Gupta informed that the university would be developed as a centre of excellence for new knowledge creation rather than studying the same conventional courses which lack additions and revisions.

Usually in certificate courses which are of short term students are not exposed to such a magnificent world class experience of knowledge sharing. The whole process could be seen as an attempt to replicate the glorious past of famous University like Nalanda and Takshila which were centers for exchange and new knowledge creation.
