It is important to respect different cultures. It creates connectivity among the people,” says linguist V Ganeshan.
An open lecture on ‘Inter Cultural Communication’ was held here on Wednesday at Swami Vivekananda library. The lecture was organized by the library for the students who want to learn various foreign language or who are learning these languages with the purpose to move out of the country for higher studies or business.
V Ganeshan, a known linguist conducted the open lecture. He said that though many people has a perception that if they will learn English properly they will be able to make a living anywhere in the world. But this is untrue as every country has their medium of communication and the languages very in each country. He said that each individual lives with the culture, tradition, beliefs and language of his country. So it is important to learn the language where a person is living. He said that meeting with the people from different cultures and backgrounds it is also important to make connectivity among each other. So these days the need for ‘Inter Cultural Communication, Cross Culture Communication and International Communication’ is increasing among the youth. Also these days it is required to understand what the other person wants to communicate for this it is important to learn foreign language.
Quoting example he says that in India we may ask some foreigner his name in English, but if someone will use this phrase in England then it will be shocking for them. The reason is that Indian English is somehow a translation of Hindi so some words are not used in England. Giving similar examples he stresssed the importance of learning languages to understand different cultures.
