A rare hip replacement surgery using Modular Dual Mobility Hip Replacement system was first time performed in Bhopal at Bansal Hospital. Patient, 45-year-old Naresh had a life changing experience.
Naresh, businessman by occupation, had been experiencing pain in right hip for almost past eight years. Over the years, pin became so severe that his business, daily routine and social life started to get affected. Naresh’s business required extensive travelling, which also started to get compromised. Since past one year, Naresh found it terribly painful to walk a few meters, climb stairs or sit on floor. A disease called Avascular Necrosis had severely affected his hip joint that was eating into his right hip.
Renowned joint replacement surgeon Dr RP Singh, after examining his condition advised hip replacement with Modular Dual Mobility Hip system. “This hip especially beneficial for young patients who have a long active lifespan ahead, is designed to relieve pain, enhance stability and improve the range of motion for patients suffering from hip joint disorder. I felt that this implant will help patient get back to an active lifestyle as its construct and design is such that it has almost nil chances of dislocation. There has not been any other hip replacement that enables dual mobility in-between boll and socket. This not only reduces wear rate but also provides a stable construct,” explained Dr Singh to mediapersons here on Thursday.
Speaking about his condition Naresh says that it all started eight years back when he was on steroids for treatment of a medical condition. Unaware of the fact that these steroids were causing Avasucular Necrosis (AVN) of hip, my hips suffered irreversible damage. Due to which I felt shooting pain in my hips, especially early morning. I was told that due to AVN, blood supply to hip bone was stopped which caused damage of the joint.”
Further explaining AVN, Dr Singh stated that in case of AVN, as blood supply to the bone is cut off which causes the bone tissues to crash and bone to collapse. This condition often progresses at a fast pace and leaves patient in severe pain and disabled condition. In case of Naresh, AVN had predominantly affected his right hip joint causing discomfort in daily routine activities. Such disabling condition often causes feeling of despair and depression amongst patients, which was the case with Naresh. In such cases, proper counseling with patient and family is very important.”
