The theatre lovers of the city witnessed a wondrous theatrical performance in a Hindi play Rang Bhoomi here on Sunday at Antrang Hall of Bharat Bhavan.

Directed by a noted theater personality Surendra Sharma, the play was staged by the artists of Rang Saptak Theatre Group, New Delhi. Notably, Rang Saptak presented the show under the guest performance organised by Rangmandal, Bharat Bhavan. The play is adapted from the Hindi novel Rang Bhoomi by Munshi Premchand and some incidents are chocked out from a play Basti Pandeyapur. While talking to The Pioneer, Director Surendra Sharma said, “This play basically shows the war between ethics and capitalism which, in much extend connect to the viewers.”

This play basically deals with the eternal contrast of values and materialism, and explores the complex human psyche which makes one adopt different shades of human behaviour. The play begins with a village scene where a piece of land is focused on. The villagers are spending their fun time at that piece of land that actually belongs to the blind beggar Surdas (Nandkishore Panth). Set in the background of British era, the play from the very first scene captivates the eye of the audience.

Surdas, instead of being a millionaire leads a simple life as he is blind and cannot do anything about it. Meanwhile a business man John Sewak (Surendra Sharma) enters the scene. This business man desires to grab the land and establish a cigarette factory there. Unaware of the real owner of the land John Sewak and his family always mistreats Surdas. As the few incidents happen, John Sewak is informed about the real owner. As soon as he discovered the fact, he and his family start pleading Surdas to sell the land.

Undoubtedly, the play ended at a sad note, but here the audience is given a message by Surdas that ‘life is a game; one has to play it carefully and with some smart sense. With sensible lighting effect and matured acting the play was much enjoyed by the audience.
