Rain, hailstorm lash Bhopal, disrupt traffic

The day temperature dipped by four notches within an hour on Saturday in the State Capital after a spell of thundershower and hailstorm that disrupted normal life.

The abrupt change in the weather is attributed to the impact of Hudhud cyclone that lashed the Andhra coastline last Sunday. A number of trees were uprooted, disrupting the normal traffic in different parts of the city. There was also damage to several vehicles in the rain and storm. The sudden change in the weather conditions was caused by the Upper Air Cyclonic Circulation over the south-east region of the State which was over Rajasthan earlier.

The weather changed at around 3 pm in the city after the sudden cloud cover over the city poured, followed by strong winds and hailstorm. More rain and rough weather would continue to disrupt the normal life across the State and the Capital, warned the Met officials. In the next 24 hours Bhopal, Hoshangabad, Indore, Ujjain, Gwalior and Chambal divisions would receive heavy rain in isolated places.

A tree was uprooted near the Chief Minister’s residence which blocked the road but alert and immediate action by the BMC cleared the road and the disrupted traffic was resumed. In another incident, the windshield of a car was damaged after a tree fell over the front portion of the car at Professor Colony.

Big-sized hailstones were witnessed across the city damaging several vehicles and injuring commuters who were surprised by the sudden change in the weather conditions from normal to harsh within few moments. The commuters were surprised and were found struggling to find shelter to save from the heavy downpour and hailstorm.

Nehru Nagar petrol pump, Kamla Park, Shymala Hills, Kotra Market, Ravishankar Nagar, Palash Hotel, Anand Vihar, Shashtri Nagar, MlB College, Jharneshwar Complex, TT Nagar and Banganga were the areas where trees fell and disrupted the traffic and normal life.
