Director General of Police (DGP) Nandan Dubey has instructed the department officials to provide security to the witnesses in the cases related to crime against women.
Dubey in an instruction letter to the officials asked them to pay special attention to witnesses in crime against women cases. “Due to improper security to the witnesses in the women crime cases the accused either by threatening, inducements or by influencing them forces them to give testimony in their favour to jejune the case,” Dubey said.
Dubey further instructed the officials to keep contact details of the witnesses — including their residential addresses, telephone and mobile numbers in the police stations. The victim and the witness should be contacted from time to time to know that whether or not they are being threatened or induced by the accused. If accused or witness report threatening or inducement than immediately legal action should be taken against the accused and security be provided to victim and witness, he added.
He said that the Kotwars and members of the security committee should be told to provide security to the victims and witness and in case of any threat to them the local police station should immediately be informed.
For giving alibi the witnesses should be brought to court under security. The police personals accompanying the witnesses and victim for security should ensure that their statement get recorded on the fixed date and they be returned safely to their places.
Arrangements should be made that women police personals should be sent with the witness and victim when they are going to court for hearing. The accompanying police personnels should introduce them to the Government advocate so that the recommendations of the Supreme Court could be followed, he added.
The DGP said that for the monitoring of crime against women a sub-inspector level officer should be appointed in every police station.
