Proposal for Rao's memorial an expression of courtesy: BJP

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Madhya Pradesh unit president and MP Nandkumar Singh Chouhan has termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposal for construction of the late Prime Minister Narsimha Rao’s memorial  on the banks of Yamuna in New Delhi as an expression of political tolerance, courtesy and generosity.

Chouhan in a statement on Wednesday said, “The need to give proper respect to the former Prime Minister is needed today because it was Narsimha Rao, who freed India from bankruptcy and brought it on the rail of economic liberalisation to get rid of the quota, permit and shortages.”

Chouhan further said that the treatment meted out to the prime minister of their own party by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his tenure is also an extreme of malice and intolerance. After his demise, neither the dead body of Rao was given respect at Congress headquarters nor did the then regime provided place to the departed soul in New Delhi with memorials of other Prime Minister’s of the country.

This was averted by terming it the fearfulness of the then prime minister Manmohan Singh. But the matter of deleting Rao’s memories by the Congress is a thing that is out of sense, he added. He said when Rao assumed the office of Prime Minister of India, the country’s foreign stocks were not able to clear foreign liabilities of one billion dollars. Rao had then said that to combat drastic disease, drastic treatment is necessary. He showed efficiency in tackling terrorism.

The aim of the Centre is to bring to the fore the good works done by him so that the future generations could know about his contributions. This would also be a matter of pride and self respect for the 1.25 million countrymen this too at time when the Congress is burdened with its own weight, he added.
