The Corporators at the general council meeting on Thursday unanimously turned down a proposal for establishment of abattoir in Adampur Chhawni, in the outskirts of the state capital. The moved was opposed by both BJP and Opposition Congress corporators.
last year, the State Government had decided to set up a modern abattoir at Adampur Chhawani. It led to protests by locals backed by BJP MlA Rameshwar Sharma.
The dismissal of the proposal in BMC council came as a blow to M Mayor Alok Sharma. BJP members joined Congress corporators in Opposition to the proposal. BMC had allocated around Rs 2 crore for the building a state of the art facility at Adampur Chhawani, on the outskirts of the city.
The modern slaughterhouse was proposed after directive for National Green Tribunal (NGT). It has given the BMC a deadline to begin abattoir facility by March 2018. NGT had directed the government to submit a performance guarantee of Rs 2 crore. If the BMC fails to abide by the green tribunal order, it faces a fine of Rs 10,000 per day starting March 31, nest year.
The affidavit further stated that the BMC will commence the slaughterhouse construction immediately after the land allotment, adding the work will take 18 months to complete.
In September 2016, the State government had changed its stand on allotment of land for slaughterhouse at Stud Farms near Arera Hills. Government affidavit allocated about 10-acre of the 59 acre land at Stud Farms near MP Nagar that had already been listed as the location for main depot for Bhopal Metro. It too faced protest from local population.
