Problems galore at city hostels

The hostels for the students in the State Capital are facing problems and the authorities are completely unconcerned with the woes students are facing.

The major problem for hostelers is no choice of roommates. They have suggested the authorities to consider providing alternatives to the students before allotting new rooms.

There are hundreds of Government and private hostels functioning in different areas of Bhopal, but ironically, the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) is yet to come out with rules and regulations related to hostels.

Particularly, Indrapuri, MP Nagar, Piplani, Gautam Nagar and others areas are known as students’ hub because a large number of students reside there. There are many hostels in these areas. living in hostel is not an easy task for students. Elma khan from Kanpur is residing in campus hostel of her college in Arera Colony told ‘The Pioneer’, “When I was at home, the word hostel used to fantasize me. It was like hostel is somewhere you would be totally free. There would be no one to rule on you. I used to think that it would be fun being in a hostel because there would be no parents to scold or prompt every now and then asking to stop using phone and study. There would be no time limits for anything.”

However, after coming to Bhopal and putting up in the hostel, she found the reality is entirely different. Each day starts with new problem and the worst part she has to deal with them alone. Here, she feels that her dad would have cared of all the problems if it was home.

Shilpa Kashyap from Gorakhpur feels food is the major problem she comes across almost each day. The food has no taste. Sometimes it is too salty, while sometimes without salt. Moreover, almost everyday, there is shortage in the quantity of the food items. “Sometimes when I get late I have to sleep without having food and there is no one to hear me,” she added.

Another media student from Ratlam Prachi Mehra is concerned about the cleanliness in the hostel rooms and premises.

Washrooms need to be cleaned daily but there is no such arrangement in the hostel. The cleaner comes daily, but she takes pains to clean the toilets only once a week.
