Principal reprimanded for suspending students without written notice

Madhya Pradesh Commission for Protection of Child Rights reprimanded the Principal of Billabong High International School for suspending children from the school without any written notice to their guardians informing about the reasons for taking such an action.

The Commission had summoned the school principal Sujata lakhani for a hearing pertaining to the matter on Monday after a complaint was filed earlier in the month regarding the incident.

Commission Chairperson Usha Chaturvedi informed, “The school management had suspended five children from classes I, II and V allegedly for misbehaving and assaulting other school children. The parents of these children, on the other hand, allege that some other students had beaten them and the school wrongly took action against their children.”

“The truth of this whole incident will come out only after we talk to the children. The Commission has decided that keeping in view the ongoing exams, the children will not be unduly harassed and we will hold conversation with them in April.” “Meanwhile, we have reprimanded the school management for suspending the children without giving to their parents any written notice to the effect. They just casually informed the parents on phone. Further, when one of the aggrieved parents approached the Commission, the school recalled their child to attend classes and ignored the others. This is highly objectionable practice and is also against the Right to Education Act which prohibits schools from mentally harassing the students,” Chaturvedi said.

She informed that at the hearing, the school principal accepted the omission on part of the school. “However, at the present stage the Commission is not taking any action against it. Action can be taken only after the truth of the incident is brought to light by the young students,” she added.

Earlier, the school had suspended five students on allegations of misbehaving and beating other students of the school.
