Post poll rout: State Cong overhaul in the offing?

Reeling under crushing defeat in the lok Sabha elections in Madhya Pradesh, the State Congress is mulling an overhaul of the party organisation.

However, no time-line has been set for the re-structuring, Madhya Pradesh Congress President Arun Yadav said here on Thursday.

Yadav while talking to media persons here said, "I can say that the party organisation will be re-structured but no date has been fixed for it.”  The re-structuring of the party does not necessarily mean there is something wrong with the present set-up, he said, adding that the proposed recast would be done both at the State and district level.

The main Opposition party in the State managed to win just two lok Sabha seats, out of 29, in the just-concluded polls as it could only retained Chhindwara and Guna parliamentary seats from where Kamalnath and Jyotiraditya Scindia recorded victories. Yadav himself could not retain his Khargone seat besides nine other seats that were snatched by the BJP from it.

Congress, which is out of power in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ruled MP since 2003, also faced comprehensive defeat in the Assembly elections held in November last year.

Meanwhile, since the drubbing in the Assembly and parliamentary elections dissent has started growing fissures in the Madhya

Pradesh Congress, with several party leaders assigning blame for the party’s disastrous defeat to the party leadership of the State.

Party leaders here questioned the competence of the state president and said that along with anti-incumbency and inflation, he was one of the major reasons behind the party’s dismal performance besides the dissatisfied leaders also hold senior leaders, including party general secretary and former Chief Minister of State Digvijay Singh, former State president Suresh Pachouri and former union ministers Kamalnath and Jyotiraditya Scindia responsible for party’s poor performance in the State.
