According to the police, vital link in the murder case was provided by son-in-law of the deceased, Satyanarayan Pateria, who visited the city and incidentally, met Habibganj police station SHO Sudhir Arjariya. He told that his father-in-law Harimohan Tiwari, who used to live in a rented apartment in Kolar area, is missing for the past few days.

After the identity of the deceased was established, during the investigation, it was found that the deceased used to drink liquor and on the day of the murder while he was drinking, he met Haneef at bar at Prabhat petrol pump and later offered him to drop home before drinking liquor at secluded place. The two then went to Chetak bridge took liquor and went to drink near Durga petrol pump where Haneef tried to snatch money from the deceased, but he offered resistance after which Haneef strangulated him using a stole and escaped with money and mobile phone.
