A play based on concept ‘fight cancer’ will be brought on stage for the theatre buffs of the city. Under the guest series of drama presentation, the play ‘Trumali’ will be performed at Tribal Museum on February 22 and at Shaheed Bhavan on 23.
Directed by Sonali Bharadwaj and written by Priyanaka Charan the play brings a story of a woman who has recovered herself from the tortures of Breast Cancer. The event is organised by Trikarshi Theatre Troupe, Bhopal.
It is to be noted that Sonali has worked in theatres at Jawahar Bal Bhavan, then Trikarshi Theatre Troupe and later at National School of Drama (NSD). Currently, she is teaching at Subhash Ghai’s institute Whistling Woods, Mumbai.
Talking about the play, Sonali said, “Every theatre piece brings us a slice of life, Turmali too is a manifestation of life through a play. Every character in this play, whether consciously or sub-consciously raises questions about the societal perceptions of a Complete Human Body”.
She further said, “As women, we have been raised in a society where conversations about our bodies make us &those around us uncomfortable. And when the conversation is on a subject as pertinent as breast cancer, which is often buried in hushed tones or in the homes of survivors, it is important to break the taboo.”
“Turmali is our attempt to spark a discussion and create awareness about the seldom touched topic of losing a body part that defines one’s sexual identity. Does a single body part define beautyIJ Is it possible to make the journey from physical incompleteness to human completenessIJ It is the story of self-discovery and of a complete human being with an incomplete body,” she added.
