The tumultuous yet inspiring life of a surrealist painter Frida Kahlo was brilliantly enacted in an English play ‘My Diego, My Art’.The play was staged here on Tuesday to mark the conclusion of a four-day National Theatre Festival, organised by Shadow Group, Bhopal.
The play My Diego My Art is a solo act that was staged by Mi Amor Theater, Delhi. Directed by KR Omkar the play was performed by Sindhu Murthy. Notably, the play is written by Sindhu Murthy.
An intensely passionate love story that weaves romance, art, adulation, love affairs, infidelity, heart-break, loneliness, bisexuality, courage and most importantly, utter madness. This solo performance is a riveting account of the art and life of one of the most luminous painters of the 20th century, Frida Kahlo. Her obsessive love for the revolutionary painter, Diego Rivera feeds into her art. Or is it the other way aroundIJ
My Diego, My Art took the audience on Frida Kahlo’s lust for life, her uncompromising honesty in art and her effrontery towards a life-threatening accident, numerous surgical interventions on her body, and several abortions, all handled like a true-blue Mexican, who mocks life’s situations, including death. She arrives at a philosophical compromise that everything is ephemeral except her all-consuming love for Diego.
Her story reeks of undaunted optimism, unfolding with dollops of Hispanic music, as well as dance and poetry straight from her personal diary.
The solo act was performed brilliantly before the Bhopalites. The emotions were expressed with supreme art of choreography leaving the audience spell bounded. It was an extremely wonderful, the music was soothing and the wheel chair used as a prop brought out the actual sense of the play. The costumes represented the era of 20th century, Mexico. The theatre lovers of the city enjoyed the play whole heartedly and appreciated the solo enactment as well.
