In the same series for the month of July, 2014 the ‘Exhibit of the Month’ is “Tadpa- A musical instrument of Maharashtra” was inaugurated jointly by Mr. Raghav Chandra and Pramod Kumar Jain at Veethi Sankul, Manav Sangrahalaya on Tuesday.
Tarpa or Pavra, a blowing instrument with seven holes is an inseparable part of the cultural events and performances of the Warli tribe, living in the north-eastern part of Thana district of Maharashtra. This instrument is played as an accompaniment to the tarpo dance performed to appease the corn and grain deity- Kansari and Narandev respectively. Incidentally it may be suggested that the name of the instrument is itself derivable from tad, the leaves of which are used in making the funnel. Also known as tarpu or tarpe, this musical instrument is also found in Gujarat as well. Each Tarpa is unique according to the aesthetic sense of the musician.
