Patient of SMA syndrome successfully operated at AIIMS

Published on:

Team of General Surgery department, AIIMS Bhopal has successfully treated a rare surgical condition SMA syndrome (Superior Mesenteric artery syndrome) in a 20-year female patient Sunita (name changed).

She is an Engineering student from Sagar and was suffering from pain in abdomen for almost one year. She took treatment in many hospitals in Sagar and Bhopal but she did not get relief. She was almost bed ridden due to pain and vomiting for last one month. Surgery team in AIIMS Bhopal diagnosed the cause of pain.

SMA syndrome is a rare surgical disorder and it is seen in less than 0.1% population.  Treatment of this condition is surgery, which is usually done by open method. The Surgery team in AIIMS Bhopal, which consists of Dr. Washim Firoz Khan along with Prof (Dr) Shyam Lal and Dr Swagata Brahmachari, performed the surgery successfully by laparoscopy (key hole). Successful keyhole surgery helped the patient to have faster recovery and patient was discharged on 5 day following surgery.

To our knowledge this is the first successful laparoscopic surgery for SMA syndrome in Madhya Pradesh. The surgery team is happy to share that AIIMS Bhopal is ready to take up challenging and academic cases in future as well, under the able leadership of Prof (Dr) Ajai Singh (Director, AIIMS Bhopal).
