Parties to stage dharna against proposed Chutka nuclear plant

Published on:

Several organisations and political parties that had earlier raised voice against the proposed 1400MW nuclear power plant at Chutka in Mandla district have declared to launch another round of agitation against the project alleging that the Union and State government have joined hands to proceed with the project ignoring its dangerous consequences.

Interacting with the media persons here on Friday, representatives of several organisations including Communist Party of India - Marxist-leninist (CPI-Ml), Communist Party of India (CPI), Jan Sangharsh Morcha (JSM), Gondwana Gantantra Party (GGP), Madhya Pradesh Mahila Manch and others said that the proposed nuclear plant at Chutka is located in earthquake-prone area of the state and therefore it posed danger to the people.

They also alleged that ruling establishment in India was acting as an “agent” of global nuclear corporate lobby whose dangerous technology is being push forward despite public opposition to it. They also said that Government was not seriously contemplating development of non-polluting sources of energy under the pressure of corporate houses that have large stakes in the conventional energy sector.

They also criticised the Government for holding public-hearing on July 31 in Chutka village on environmental aspect of the project based on an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report that is in English and therefore incomprehensible for the illiterate tribal population in the area. These organisations will hold a dharna in the State capital on Saturday against the proposed project.
