Only Pentavalent to be administered to newborns

Published on:

Different vaccines will not be administered to save infants from diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, Hepatitis-B and HIB in Government hospitals now. Instead, a single Pentavalent vaccine will be administered free to save the lives of the newborns in the State.

The vaccines were administered to infant from one and half months after birth up to age of one year and 3 months 4 times. This was quite painful for infants. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan will launch process of administering Pentavalent vaccine on October 29, 2014. The vaccine will be a boon for infants in the state and efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates will be boosted.

No vaccine was available under National Vaccination Programme for pneumonia, brain fever and pouring from ear. Pentavalent vaccine, Hib will prove to be boon for infants. About 3 lakh 70 thousand children below 5 years of age die of influenza type B (Hib) in the world. Of these, 20 percent children die in India. Most of children suffering from Hib develop long-term symptoms of stroke, hearing loss and damage to brain. Through hib vaccine, one-third cases of pneumonia and 90 percent cases of brain fever can be prevented. Earlier, children were administered injections 6 times, which will be reduced to 3 times now with launch of Pentavalent vaccine (at the age of one and half, 2 and half and 3 and half months).

Principal Secretary Health Praveer Krishna informed that process will be continued to administer 24 BCGs and dose of hepatitis-B and polio to children born under institutional delivery. First measles vaccination of children from 9 to 12 months and booster dose, second dose of DPT, polio and measles from 16 to 24 months and booster dose of DPT from 5 to 6 years of age will also continue.
