'Online admission mandatory for minority colleges too'

Minority colleges will also have to admit students through the online admission process of Department of Higher Education (DHE) from 2013-14 academic session. The minority institutes were exempted of the online admission process in the academic session 2012-13.

Department of Higher Education (DHE) has asked the minority colleges to submit their records of admissions for last three academic sessions. If in the records it is found out that more non-minority students were admitted in colleges then colleges will be included in online admission process.

It is worth mentioning that except for minority institutions and few autonomous institutions all other under graduate and post graduate colleges in State were included in online admission process.

Minority colleges were exempted from the process due to the recommendations of National Commission for Minority Educational Institutes (NCMEI) and to adhere with section 30(A) of the constitution.

But the DHE this year is going to include them also to maintain the academic standard in the State. DHE in this regard has sent a proposal to the State Government and demanded their inclusion.

According to sources, out of the 23 minority colleges in the State only four colleges have admitted over 50 per cent students from minority only, rest of the colleges have admitted mostly non-minority students.

These non-minority students are not admitted through merit basis which affects the uniformity of admission system of the State.

DHE will give priority to minority students in the allotment of seats of minority colleges if after the allotment also seats remain vacant in the colleges then those seats will be converted into non-minority seats and will be allotted to students on the basis of merit.

It is also being claimed by some minority college administrators that their authority will be decreased by this admission process which will be wavering of Supreme Court orders.
