Of 10 MP MlAs contesting, only one wins

Only one of the ten legislators from the state who contested the lok Sabha polls could register victory while nine MlAs lost the election, and from the 37 woman candidates who were in the fray, only five won the polls.

Both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the main Opposition in the state Congress had fielded ten legislators in the run for the sixteenth lok Sabha. Of them, only Manohar Untwal, a member of the Shivraj cabinet of the state, could manage to win while the rest nine could not taste victory.

The Congress fielded its seven MlAs in the fray while the BJP fielded three, all the seven Congress MlAs and the two BJP MlAs lost the election. The BJP fielded Chowdhry Chandrabhan Singh against outgoing Union minister Kamalnath from Chhindwara and Jaibhan Singh Pawayya was also fielded by the BJP against another Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia from Guna. Both these MlAs lost the election.

The Congress fielded its seven MlAs including Ajay Singh Rahul from Satna, Govind Singh from Morena, Hina Kanwre from Balaghat, Sundarlal Tiwari from Rewa, Umang Singar from Dhar, Imarti Devi from Bhind and Omkar Singh Markam from Mandla but none of these MlAs could register victory.

As many as 37 woman candidates were also in the fray. Of these, 5 woman candidates registered victory including Jyoti Dhurve in Betul, Savitri Thakur in Dhar, Sumitra Mahajan in Indore, Reeti Pathak from Sidhi and Sushma Swaraj in Vidisha.

In 2009 election, six women reached the lok Sabha from the state. This time the number has dropped to five despite the fact that of the last three elections the maximum number of 37 women candidates was in this election.  In 2009 general elections 29 women were in the fray of them 6 emerged victorious.

The defeat of the nine legislators has also ensured that there would be only one by-election for the state assembly — from Alot Assembly constituency of Ratlam — as the sitting MlA has emerged victorious in the lok Sabha election.
