A joint team of the Health department and district administration on Thursday caught a nurse while she was carrying out an illegal medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) in Aishbagh locality here.
Official sources said the clinic, where the illegal practice was carried out, was run by two nurses — Usha and Anita Bose, against whom non-bailable arrest warrants have been issued, said Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Basant Kurre. He informed Usha was reportedly in Kerala at the time of the raid, while only Anita was found at the clinic. Acting on a tip off, Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr Pankaj Shukla sent a woman to the clinic posing as a patient in need of termination of pregnancy.
He said Anita asked the woman for Rs 2,000 and was given some medicines along with a prescription. Before raid, the timing was fixed to conduct raid at the clinic, officials of Health department and district administration were deployed near the spot. As soon as the woman after entering the clinic gave signal to the team members, they entered the premises and caught the nurse red-handed. Officials said in the preliminary investigation, it was found that Usha and Anita were qualified to conduct an MTP. However, performing an MTP without valid permission by an appropriate authority is an offence, officials in the health department said.
