Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC) on getting complaint of opening of a liquor shop in residential areas of the State capital Kalpana Nagar and Sonagiri issued notice to Bhopal Collector asking as to why the permission was granted in residential area and counted the difficulties faced by residents.

Residents of Sonagiri and Kalpana Nagar have reached the Commission office on Wednesday and lodged complaint that the places selected in these colonies for opening of liquor shops are residential areas. Many families live above the shops in flats and on the ground floor, there are shops of grocery, medical and ladies tailors, in which women and children visit.

Opening of liquor shop in this area would impair the environment besides, there is also school bus stop and opening of liquor shop would adversely affect the children. Counting all these problems the residents of both the colonies requested the Commission to help them get rid of this sensitive and humanitarian problem.

The Commission after hearing the problems of residents of both the colonies issued notice to the Bhopal Collector under section 13 (2) of Human Rights Protection Act asking him to take legal action over it as it is violation of human rights of citizens. Why liquor shops have been opened at a place where women, children and families liveIJ In such situation there are possibilities that drunken people could cause mental and physical harm.

The Commission also wanted to know why liquor shop is opened at such places.

There are many places in Bhopal where liquor shops have been opened in residential places where children are learning abuses from drunken.

The Commission mentioning example of Nehru Nagar said that commoners are misbehaved there and the women of that area are doing agitation while liquor contractors’ henchman manhandled women hence permission for opening of liquor shops in residential areas should not be provided.
