This is for the first time after seven years that both the major political parties, BJP and Congress, do not field any candidate from the palace in the Gwalior constituency.
There has been no instance when candidates from palace confronted each other. Moreover, none of the candidate from palace has been defeated till date from Gwalior. This time, there will be direct neck to neck fight between BJP candidate its State president Narendra Singh Tomar and Congress candidate Ashok Singh. Even the top leader of BJP Atal Bihari Vajpayee was defeated by Congress candidate Madhav Rao Scindia in 1984 parliamentary election. The palace had fielded Vijayaraje Scindia on Bharatiya Janasangh ticket and won the seat.
It was only in 1996 that the Congress candidate Madhav Rao Scindia was given a neck to neck fight by BJP candidate Jai Bhan Singh Pawiya. Scindia could win the seat by a slender margin of 26,000 votes.
After independence the first MP from Gwalior parliamentary seat Narian Bhaskar Khare of Hindu Maha Sabha. In the second election Suraj Prakash of Congress won this seat. Thereafter, Vijayaraje Scindia captured the seat on Bharatiya Janasangh ticket. later, Ramautar Sharma and Atal Bihari Vajpayee won the seat on Bharatiya Janasangh ticket.
Narian Krishna Shejwalkar won the seat first on Janata Party ticket. later, Madhav Rao Scindia won the seat continuously for four times from 1984 to 1998.
