The Gwalior police have formulated a new set of strategies to rein in the illicit liquor and drug business that have been thriving across the district for the past many years.
According to statistics available with the police, liquor and drugs are the main reasons behind most of the heinous crimes like rape, murder and kidnapping.
The police have been facing flak from many quarters for the lackadaisical approach in dealing with the business of illicit liquor and drugs.
In some cases it has been come to the light that some of these businesses are being carried out in connivance with some members of the police.
Now, with a change in the government the police department has decided to go after the drug and illicit liquor traders in a big way. The Gwalior SP, Navneet Bhasin has formed a special crime branch team to keep track of offenders, especially those who were involved in such illicit trade in the past. He has asked the team to keep track of all such offenders, especially those who have been released from prisons in the recent. It is believed that these criminals, after their release from the jail lose no time in returning to their old trades. He has also asked the jail authorities to furnish details of all prisoners related to drugs, illicit liquor and betting.
The SP also asked the Crime Brach team to take steps to stop the illegal trading of Nitravet tablets which is a hypnotic and sedative drug, but has the potential to cause severe behavioral disorders. It has been found out that many medical shops in the city sell this medicine without a doctor’s prescription. He has asked the police team to file criminal charges against such medical shops.
According to sources in the police, the department is also planning to bring out a list of all such medicines that should not be sold without a proper medical prescription.
