Principal Secretary Health Praveer Krishna has said that success of family welfare programme depends on reduction of maternal & infant mortality rates. He was addressing a workshop here on Tuesday. The workshop was held jointly by Health and Family Welfare Department and JAPIGO to chalk out an action plan to strengthen post-natal family planning programme for improving mother and infant mortality rates.

Krishna said that health index of a State is gauged on the basis of maternal and infant mortality rates. Therefore, family planning programme will have to be linked with mother and child tracking system.

Krishna said that birth rate in the State is 2.3 per cent. It has to be brought down to 1 percent. This target can be achieved through qualitative service. He said that possible links between permanent and temporary resources will have to be inter-linked.

For this, he laid emphasis on action by forming departmental teams at district and civil hospitals. He said that whatever work is done should be concrete and real. He also exhorted to link family planning with vaccination.

Referring to department’s achievements, Krishna said that due to good works, Madhya Pradesh has received first prize in child health management at a function held in Jammu-Kashmir recently.

Commissioner Health Pankaj Agrawal and National Rural Health Mission’s State Director M Geeta also spoke on the occasion. They said that coordinated efforts are the need of the hour to improve maternal and infant mortality rates and success of family planning.

Civil surgeons, gynaecologists and representatives of NGOs from districts participated in the workshop where detailed information was specially given about PPIUCD. Strategy for year 2013-14 for population stabilisation was also discussed at the meeting. National Programme Officer of JAPIGO Dr Vivek Agrawal gave requisite suggestions and guidance on group work action plan. The proceedings were conducted by State Programme Manager of JAPIGO Dr Jyoti Banwari.
