Nationwide ryots' stir: MP remains peaceful

Recuperating from the violence during a stir by peasants at the start of this month, the situation remained peaceful in Madhya Pradesh on Friday amid the call to farmers in the country to stage road blockades on national highways.

Rashtriya Kisan Mazdoor Sangh president Shiv Kumar Sharma, who is leading an agitation by farmers in Madhya Pradesh, was arrested along with his supporters while they were planning to stage a road blockade in the State capital.

Misrod Sub-Divisional Magistrate Ateek Ahmed Khan said Sharma was arrested in view of fear of disruption of peace. Prior to his arrest, Sharma told media that he would not seek bail. “The spate of farmers’ suicides won’t stop by arresting me. The administration needs to worry over controlling the number of suicides,” he said.

A report from Indore said peace prevailed in all the areas. Additional police force was deployed on the highways. No untoward incident was reported in Indore, Gwalior, Jabalpur and other parts of the State.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Jyotiraditya Scindia’s three-day ‘satyagraha’ ended on Friday. Former Union Minister Suresh Pachouri, RS member Satyavrat Chaturvedi and other Congress leaders remained present during the ‘satyagraha.’
