Under the museum series ‘Exhibit of the Month’ of Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (IGRMS), a traditional object is being displayed for a whole month.

The exhibit for the month of September - “Taran-Daran” a wooden vessel of Hill Tiwa Tribe from Karbi Anglong, Assam is on display in the indoor exhibition building – Veethi Sankul. The 'exhibit of the month' has been inaugurated by Rajendra Singh Negi artist from Uttarakhand and Prof Sarit Kumar Chaudhuri (Director, IGRMS). This exhibit of the month has been compiled by Shrikant Gupta (Museum Associate). Known as ‘Traan/Daran’ by the Hill Tiwa tribe of Assam, this wooden vessel is an important item of a family. Mostly prepared out of a single log of Mango and Jackfruit tree, it is mainly used at the time of preparing rice beer (Yu) for daily uses, important social occasions, rituals and functions.

It has its unique appearance consisting of a bowl-shaped body, strong base, circular mouth and a hollow tube projected from one side of the body. The shape is attained by carving out from a single log where tube like narrow tape is fashioned to serve the function for a convenient use for serving the beer.
