Maach is a form of folk theatre from the Malwa region of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Maach is thought to have originated from the Khyal theatre form of Rajasthan which spread out of the state and is thought to have, besides itself and Maach, also given rise to other North Indian folk theatre forms of Nautanki in Uttar Pradesh and Swang in Haryana.

The play showcased the story of Raja Rasalu who is known as the hero of Punjab. His tales have been published in books many times. One of his stories, which is known to people is about his marriage to princess Phoolbadan.

Princess Phoolbadan was a beautiful princess. For her swayamvar, she kept a condition, that anyone who will answer all her riddles he will marry her. But, if not, she will capture all the princes in the cell.

One of those hostages was Sital Singh. His wife asked Raja Rasalu for help. Raja Rasalu went to meet the princess and answered all her riddles correctly. Later, both of them married each other.
