Madhya Pradesh could witness students union polls though direct elections next month, after around 32 years.

Official sources said that the Higher Education department has prepared a draft for the direct student elections and soon it would be presented before Chief Minister Kamal Nath for approval.

Higher Education Minister Jitu Patwari has on Wednesday announced that state government was of the view that student should elect their own representatives. The minister had made it clear that the students would elect their own leaders through direct election process.

Patwari however did not specify any schedule for the elections only saying the student polls would be held soon.

A youth leader of the Congress party however claimed that a draft proposal is being made for the direct polls with an aim to nurture a young leadership which could not only take up politics as a career but could also contribute to other spheres in the society as well.

Sources claimed that the draft plan prepared by the Higher Education department has vested greater powers in elected university representatives so as to let them contribute to the society and politics in general alongside elected representatives like MLA and MP.

Last time, it was in 1987 that the student union polls were held in the state and afterwards either the students’ polls were carried out through indirect elections or were simply cancelled fearing violence in education campuses.

Though Congress backed National Student Union of India (NSUI) and the RSS backed student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) kept taking up cudgels against the ruling parties at times against their own party in power as well demanding direct polls.
