Birju Kulu (51) of Sundargarh district, who had returned home after spending 20 years in a jail in Pakistan and later gone missing from his house, was traced in Talcher, informed SP Sagarika Nath on Tuesday. A team led by the Kutra police station IIC left for Talcher to bring him back.

Birju, who is mentally unstable, had left his home and boarded a truck to reach Talcher. His sister had lodged a police complaint that he went missing on the night of January 2. Birju, a resident of Katang village under Kutra block, had been imprisoned in Pakistan on suspicion of being a spy from India.

He had left his home at an age of 25 years and mistakenly crossed the Pakistan border. The Pakistan army caught him suspecting him to be a spy. He was awarded imprisonment after being convicted by a Pakistan court.

He was freed from the jail in Lahore on October 26 last year and handed over to the Indian authorities at the Wagah border.
