A police constable was mowed down by a sand truck on Sunday in Morena district. The incident occurred when the constable was trying to stop the truck carrying illegally mined sand from Chambal river near a village in Morena. The victim died on the spot, while the truck driver managed to flee leaving his vehicle behind. Notably, in the same Morena district's Banmore region, on March 8, 2012, an IPS officer, Narendra Kumar, posted as Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Bamore, was trying to stop a tractor loaded with illegally-quarried stones when he was crushed to death.
Superintendent of Police Navneet Bhasin said the dumper was carrying illegally mined sand. When the constable tried to stop the truck, the driver ran the vehicle over him. The constable, Dharmendra Chouhan, had gone to louhgarh village under Noorabad police station limits along with a team late Saturday night following a tip-off that some persons involved in a loot incident were hiding there. He spotted a dumper parked on a roadside there and decided to check it past midnight, Inspector General, Chambal Range, RS Meena, said.
The driver upon seeing the police tried to escape from the spot along with the dumper loaded with illegally mined sand, he said. But, the 40-year old constable, posted at Noorabad police station, clung onto its door on the driver's side and tried to pull him down, he said. The driver then started reversing the dumper at a great speed and then turned it towards the driving side. As a result, the vehicle fell into a ditch and overturned trapping the constable under it resulting in his death, Meena said.
The dumper driver fled from the spot soon after the incident, he said. The constable's body was retrieved from under the dumper and sent for autopsy, the IG said, that adding that a case has been registered in this regard and further investigations are on.
