A mild tremor measuring 2.8 on the ritcher scale was felt in several parts of Madhya Pradesh’s cantonment town, Jabalpur on Wednesday triggering panic among local residents, who came out of their houses. Though no reports of damage to human life and property has been reported yet.

“The epicenter of the tremor measuring 2.8 on the Ritcher scale was some eight-nine km from the local meteorological department,” the Department said, adding that the tremor was felt around 1048 hours and lasted two-four seconds. No loss of life or property has been reported.

Perched on the banks of Narmada River, this cantonment town is considered quite sensitive from the viewpoint of earthquake. This is the second time that earthquake was felt in western region of Madhya Pradesh this year. On May 21, tremors were felt in Jabalpur and Mandla districts.

The district administration later in the day also endorsed that the tremors felt were of earthquake. District Collector Shiv Narayan Bhupla told that no casualty was reported and no loss of property has been reported. There were also reports of people experiencing mild tremors in Panagar, Katangi, Sehora and Majhouli tehsils near Jabalpur, he said.

The residents at all these places rushed out of their houses in panic after they felt the tremors. The first tremors were felt somewhere near Katangi early in the morning, but later people in Jabalpur witnessed it prominently. The eyewitnesses told ‘The Pioneer’ that the residents first heard the noise like a road roller was moving on the road, but on coming out of their houses, they realized that it was earthquake.

Since, the residents in Jabalpur have already experienced devastating earthquake in 1997, they knew all safety measures and in most of the localities the people came out of their houses and remained at open places. In May 1997, a major earthquake had devastated the town killing more than 30 people and collapsing hundreds of buildings.
