#MeToo: New internet buzz in Bhopal

‘Me Too’, the online hashtag campaign against sexual harassment has been a talk of the town. An informal discussion and interaction will be organised in the city which will be based on #Me Too. The discussion and interaction is jointly organised by Ansh Happiness Society, a youth organisation and Dylogg Coworking. The discussion will be held at Dylogg Coworking here on Saturday. Besides, the event will begin from 5 pm and will continue till 7:30 pm.

Notably, the two letter word hashtag has become viral today and is seen on the facebook walls of almost every female user. Me too spread virally as a two-word hashtag used on social media in October 2017 to denounce sexual assault and harassment, in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein.

The phrase, initially coined by social activist Tarana Burke was popularised by actress Alyssa Milano, who encouraged women to use it to publicise experiences to demonstrate the widespread nature of misogynistic behavior.

Since then, hundreds of thousands have used the hashtag to come forward with their experiences, including many celebrities. Mohsin Khan of Ansh Happiness Society told The Pioneer, “Usually such campaigns walk-in trend and people start using the hashtag even without knowing the reason behind. Besides, the cause for which the campaign was started loses its importance and value as people forget about it. This discussion is basically to let the youngsters know about what the Me Too campaign is about.” It will be a fruitful discussion for the youngsters, he added.
