Met Dept worry over a flood of unwanted calls

Besides receiving calls from media fraternity and farmers regarding weather updates, the Meteorology department receives several unwanted calls disturbing its work and wasting time.

While talking to ‘The Pioneer’ Met official SK Dey said that some of the callers ask that they wanted to go for outing and whether the weather would remain good for romance. It is not the single example of callers; there are several others who call for details of change in weather conditions for a specific region like they call and ask for rains in Kolar region as they want to erect tent for marriage function.

On the other side, there are aware farmers who call and discuss details of the weather conditions for sowing and take piece of advice which they follow seriously, he added.

Providing details of callers Dey said that farmers from Harda, Neemuch, Mandsaur, Ratlam and Raisen districts are among the frequent callers who take advice for sowing and other details of weather conditions which could help them produce better yield by protecting from harsh and abrupt weather conditions.

Sadly sometimes farmers act by imitating other farmers of the area and it occurs that employees and officials have to console and counsel the famers who bear loss in the yield, said Dey.

The department flooded with phone calls in the year 2014 after an official with good intentions on his retirement shared the phone numbers for the sake of providing help to the citizens but after the number was published in a Hindi daily the employees at the department turned into phone operators as the citizens used to call the department for various things which were not related with the weather. Gradually the situation got better but still in the year 2017 immature callers call and ask for different weather conditions but they never utilize and gather the information for fun.
