Media's 'misinformation' campaign on Talaq assailed

Published on:

The State is unnecessarily interfering in religion and that is wrong, said Asma Zehra,  Member executive committee All India Muslim Personal law Board (AIMPlB). She was in the State capital on Wednesday to address a rally of Muslim women over ‘Tahaffuz e-Shariat aur khwateen ki zimmedariyan’ (Protection of Islamic law and responsibilities of women.’

Zehra while addressing media persons said, “Much hype is created in the media and the society over the issue of triple Talaq in Islam and through that it is portrayed that Islam is anti-woman gender biased and against fundamental rights of women, whereas the reality is contrary to it and in Islam women are given equal rights in every of field of life.”

Zehra further said that Talaq is most unpleasant thing in Islam and it is discouraged but the option has been given for extreme circumstances. Every religion has a code for divorce where men and women are given the right to get separated from unsuccessful marriages, but the media is portraying the issue of Talaq to tarnish and damage the image of the muslim community. Instead of being realistic and sincerely concerned about the women issues, the focus is to degrade one particular community and attack their personal laws, she added.

She said the success rate of marriages in muslim community is 97 per cent.  Muslim Women are safe and comfortable in the Muslim Personal law. In Islam Marriage is a contract, a bond, in which both partners enjoy equal freedom and live in peace and happiness. In case of dispute the doors of divorce are kept open only to make life easy and convenient for both partners. In Islam women have the right to  remarry after divorce and even after getting widow, she added.

The AIMPlB executive committee member said that desertion and abandoning is very less in Muslim Community, and the burden of children is not on the wife. Husband (Father) is the sole responsible person for children upbringing and maintenance. In fact the wife walks out free after divorce and is free to live her life, according to her will. Many so called muslim women organisations and andolans have erupted recently who lack basic understanding of Quran and Hadith. They fail to understand that in cases of serious differences between husband and wife, separation is a safe exit. The real issues facing the Indian Society today are female feticide, female infanticide, dowry harassment, domestic violence and women safety and security. But the irony is that these are overlooked and Talaq is debated, she added.
