Accused who was involved in attempt to kidnap a 21-year-old engineering student near Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) office surrendered in court on Sunday; accused was sent under police custody of three days.

Additional Superintendent of Police Zone 2 Rajesh Bhadoria said that the accused was identified as Shareef Khan who tried to kidnap the victim on Thursday and after he found that the arrest is inevitable he surrendered.

The accused is a watch list criminal under Begumganj police station of Raisen district and has been booked for more than a dozen crimes in the past. It is found that the detail of the registration of the vehicle was tampered by the accused to evade arrest after committing crimes. It is possible that he had committed crime earlier in the city but evaded arrest which would be investigated, he added.

Initially police failed to nab the accused even after seizing the vehicle used in the kidnapping attempt and were not able to trace the whereabouts of the accused and kept searching for the accused which paid off as around 17 places were raided by the police in the past three which forced the accused to surface and surrender.

ASP Bhadoria said that it was confessed by the accused that his sole intention was to sexually assault the victim but failed in his attempt and later escaped the spot.

Auto rickshaw used in the crime was seized by the police and has been investigated.

Notably on October 22, the accused tried to kidnap the victim but she jumped off from the moving vehicle and sustained minor injuries.
