LPG distributors hold national convention, finalize demands

Published on:

LPG distributors from across India gathered at Samanvay Bhawan in the state capital on Saturday to finalise a seven-point demand charter, calling for urgent reforms in the distribution system.

The convention brought together representatives from various states. They highlighted rising operational costs and alleged neglect by oil companies and the government.

KK Dhaurtiya, National Vice President of the distributors’ body, said, “We are not begging the government; we are demanding our rights.” He warned that if appeals are ignored, protests and strikes will follow.

A key demand is an increase in commission per cylinder, which distributors say has not kept pace with diesel prices, labour costs, and inflation since the COVID era. They are asking for a minimum of Rs 150 per cylinder.

Dhaurtiya also accused oil companies of pressuring distributors while claiming there’s no compulsion to sell. “This contradiction violates the spirit of the Competition Act,” he said.

A book documenting the financial and operational challenges faced by distributors was released during the event. It includes case studies and data on the difficulties of running a distribution network.

The seven-point charter demands a hike in commission, revision of contracts, abolition of the Market Distribution Guidelines, exemption from leak liability, and relief from penalties under the Ujjwala Scheme.

Dhaurtiya warned that 25,000 distributors could go on indefinite strike if the demands are not met, with each distributor rallying 50 supporters.

BS Sharma, National President of the body, said, “Distributors are unfairly held responsible for gas leakages, even though our agreements do not include that responsibility. This double standard must end.”
