The unfulfilled desires of a newlywed bride and the game of politics were depicted in the Hindi play ‘Komal Gandhar’. The play was presented here on Tuesday at Ravindra Bhavan under the two-day theatre festival.

Directed by Prashant Khirwadkar the play marked the closure of golden jubilee celebration of Rangayaan theatre troupe.

The human emotions and atrocities of a girl’s dreams were beautifully presented by the theatre artists including Rajiv Verma and Papiya Dasgupta in main roles.

The story is written about how the Kauravas were destroyed. The Bhishma, mentor of the Mahabharata, never wanted to let the big dynasty of Hastinapur fall. He wanted a legal heir of Dhritarashtra to handle the kingdom despite the fact that Dhritrashtra’s cousins Pandavas were much eligible to handle it. But, Bhishma was not willing to hand it over to Pandavas.

To do so, he made the deal with Gandhar King and asked for his daughter’s hand to become the bride of Dhritrashtra. As the play follows Gandhari’s story, it was made clear that she was not made aware that her would be husband was a blind man.

Having created a prince-like picture of her husband in her mind she departs from Gandhar to Hastinapur. While on the way to her groom’s house, she became aware of the truth. She discovered that her imaginary picture is nothing but, a blind man, whom she is going to get married.

Then the play moves on how Gandhari takes an oath pretending as a blind woman. She does it as a revenge where her brother Shakuni also takes the advantage and tries to destroy Hastinapur. Following the birth of Duryodhan and his death formed rest of the

story.

The play was worth watching that highlights lot many human emotions and politics wonderfully.
