Universities should be provided autonomy for taking decisions on academic, financial and appointment-related matters so that they can deliver much more skilled youths in nation-building, in the various fields, said, Jiwaji University (JU) Gwalior Vice-Chancellor Professor Avinash Tiwari.

In an interview with The Pioneer here, Tiwari said that JU was the first varsity in Madhya Pradesh, that implemented the New Education Policy (NEP) in session 2021-22 and also declared the under-graduation course results first in the state. The syllabuses of new courses under NEP have been changed.

On asking about the job-oriented courses, the VC said that Implementing the NEP-2020, the University has launched 20 percent online programmes with the assistance of the MSME department and HDFC bank, focusing on self-employed, start-up, incubation and skill development. "14 skill development courses have also been started on vocational and distance mode so that youth can do professional degree/diploma/certificate along with their job anywhere", he also said.

"If autonomy in appointments and financial and academic matters is granted to Universities, they can deliver more skilled youths and competent research scholars to the country for social, economicand political betterment. Because the institutions can take prompt decisions in students' interest and for the campus improvement, it will reduce the time which hangs on in administrative approvals", Prof. Tiwari, added.

On innovation launched by him, Prof Tiwari said that University would soon start the skill development courses for inmates in Gwalior Central Jail premises to make them self-reliant and on discharge, prisoners could be employable and become entrepreneurs as well. After getting a nod from DG jail the inmates can take advantage of this initiative.

"On campus, academic development and inquiry cells have been made completely pink to support women's empowerment, where only female employees have been posted", Tiwari added on asked about women's empowerment.
