In mere 22 days after demonetisation, deposits in Jan Dhan bank accounts across 65 branches of 15 banks which includes 13 nationalised, one rural and one cooperative in Madhya Pradesh's Jhabua district has swelled by Rs23.25 crore.
"From Rs1.75 crore before the note ban on November 8, the deposit in Jan Dhan accounts surged to Rs25 crore.
Overall, deposits in various bank accounts, inclusive of Jan Dhan ones, increased by Rs110 crore from Rs1500 crore to Rs1610 crore," said district's lead branch manager Arvind Kumar.
He said nearly 70 per cent of the total 1.70 lakh Jhan Dhan accounts had deposits of less than Rs100 prior to November 8.
However, average amount in each Jan Dhan account is approximately Rs2,000 at present.
The figures indicated fewer withdrawals against deposits during the period.
Meanwhile, District Youth Congress President Ashish Bhuria demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into these deposits alleging that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders misused the accounts to park their own ill-gotten money.
