A convict serving a life sentence for the rape of a minor escaped from Hamidia Hospital on Friday morning, triggering a citywide manhunt. The prisoner, identified as Amar alias Guddu, managed to flee while under police supervision during a medical visit.

According to police officials, Amar was brought to the hospital from Bhopal Central Jail for an eye examination related to a white spot in his eyes. Around 11 a.m., while present under the watch of an escorting constable, Amar freed himself from his handcuffs and fled the premises.

Amar was convicted in a 2017 case involving the rape of a minor and had been serving a life sentence at Bhopal Central Jail for the past several years.

The incident sent the police department into high alert. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rakesh Bhangre stated that an extensive search operation was launched immediately after the escape. Police teams have been deployed across the city, particularly focusing on the convict's last known address in Mansarovar slum, under the Habibganj police station jurisdiction.
