'Initiate steps to cut down use of red beacon lights'

Additional Solicitor General of Supreme Court Vivek Tankha has urged Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in a letter to consider abolition of the designation and status associated to red/pink light system.

Referring to the apex court order, Tankha on Wednesday said in his letter, “I was reminded of the so many initiatives that Madhya Pradesh has taken under your able leadership in the last decade, and hence I take this opportunity to implore your good office, to consider abolition of the ‘designation and status associated red/pink light system’ and let it remain a functional ‘requirement of emergency or any such public emergencies system’ for use of beacons on vehicles — essentially restricted for fire-fighting, medical ambulances, policing and other analogous public emergencies.”

Tankha further said that the entire fanfare associated with red-lights has led to a system, where overuse of beacons and security has become a menace and where grabbing them as status symbols is seen as the first facet of any important civil or political post.

He said that Madhya Pradesh has showed a renewed aura of adherence to the constitutional goals and people’s democracy in real terms, under your tenure as the server of the masses. Knowing well how the people of your State have showered faith in your leadership, and their appreciation of your pioneering ventures for their benefit.

“I write this letter to implore your good offices for taking leader’s step once again, like you have done for so many projects in your State. let Madhya Pradesh be the first State, which comes up with the implementation of abolition of red lights for seats and status, and using them only for emergency purposes. By doing so, you will not only instill a solid faith of your people in your democratic and pro-people leadership, but also restore the solemn perambulatory solve by ‘we the people’ for equality of status and of opportunity,” Tankha said.
