With its theme ‘Green Ijtema-Clean Ijtema’ the 67th edition of Aalami Tableeghi Ijtema (World Islamic Congregation) starting from Saturday would somehow support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan’ (Clean India’ campaign).

This would be the third consecutive green Ijtema in Bhopal where use of polythene has been completely banned at the venue. Besides, the organisers have also issued strict guidelines not to use tobacco and its products at the venue. The step by the organising committee reflects the progressive side of the Muslim community that is otherwise considered as conservative.

While talking to ‘The Pioneer’, Ijtema organizing committee member and spokesman Atique-ul-Islam said, “Efforts would be made that polythene should not be used in any way during the Ijtema besides we are also determined to stop smoking and chewing of gutkha at the Ijtema premises.”

Islam further said, “Use of water pouches, plastic disposable cup and glasses, polythene carry bags of below standards and sale of cigarette and gutkha would not be allowed at the Ijtema site this year also to make the grand event environment friendly and pollution free.”

Notably, over fifteen lakh people from across the globe are expected to take part in the Ijtema beginning from December 6. The gathering is considered as the third largest Muslims gathering in the world after Haj.

Islam said the decision came after due considerations within the organizing committee the Ijtema is held on agriculture land and every year due to the polythene wastage left behind congregate the agriculture fields.

He said that the stall owners, hoteliers and vendors putting up their stalls at the Ijtema site have been instructed to use only eco friendly glasses and carry bags and should not sell cigarettes and gutkha. If any of them found violating this order would be compelled to immediately close business and leave the Ijtema venue, he added.
