A Hindi play ‘Makkhiyaan’ was staged at Madhya Pradesh State Tribal Museum on Friday. The play was performed under the regular drama series of Tribal Museum, ‘Abhinayan’.
Showcasing the story of Greece, the play was directed by Mukesh Sharma. It was presented by the artists of Samantar Socio Cultural Society and Theatre Troupe, Bhopal. The play was perfomed brilliantly on stage that displayed the cultures and traditions of Greek mythology as well.
The set and the stage craft was kept simple, yet the highlights of the play were the costumes and the light design. The light design was kept as the mood and the scene demanded and so added much zest in the play.
The play follows the story of Greek tradition where people are preparing for a fest. Now, this fest is something like a creepy one as they are preparing a party of death.
Going to the flashback, the play narrated the story of King Ejisthiyas. 15 years back Ejisthiyas killed King Egmenon and captured his kingdom and made prisoner his wife Clytemestra. later, he married Clytemestra and treated Egmenon’s daughter Electra as a maid. Egmenon also had a son called Orestus.
After 15 years Orestus comes back to his native place only to discover that his father had been killed and the recent king married his mother. Besides, his sister is treated as a house maid.
The entire story also suggests that the people of this kingdom were also a part of the crime, as they did not oppose the wrong doings of the king.
looking at the pitty of Orestus’s sister the god sends flies as a curse on the kingdom. On the other hand, Electra wants to avenge his father’s death and influence her brother for the same.
At the end Orestus become the king, but denies to be one as e could not bear the pain of two murders. The play was wonderfully performed and was much appreciated by the audience.
