Hindi play Court Martial disappoints theatre-goers

The Hindi play Court Martial, failed to captivate the attention of the city theatre-goers. The play was presented at Antrang hall, Bharat Bhavan, here on Thursday as a part of Madhya Pradesh Rangotsav.

Directed by Sharad Sharma, the play was presented by Abhinav Rangmandal Samiti, Ujjain. As court martial is written by one of the renowned playwright Swadesh Deepak, it has already been staged many times in the city by other theatre groups as well.

Besides, the performance of the artists was also not appealing as there were a lot of loopholes that could be noticed in the presentation of a strong script.

The story Court Martial by Swadesh Deepak questions the decision-making between right and wrong. It also questions the carelessness adopted in every department of the army and the reaction of the high rank officers towards any minor cases happening in day-to-day life of the army men.

Court Martial is a story of recruit Ram Chander who belongs to low caste is tried for murdering one of his officers Major Kapoor and injuring another Major Verma.

The play was chaired by a war veteran, Colonel Surat Singh who has witnessed many life and death situation.  But, this trial puts him in a queer position, so far unknown to him, and during the course of interrogation he realise that the issues at stake are much larger than what meets the eye.

Realising that the Indian army is the only Government agency in which reservation on caste basis is not permissible. When respect is denied to a man for the only reason that he is borne by 'low-caste' parents, the offence cannot simply be termed as a social violence. It assumes larger proportions of crime against humanity and society at large. Court Martial is all about differences and justice making.

Though, having a strong script, the performance of the artists was disappointing for the theatre-goers.

The backdrop was wonderfully put-up, but the dialogue delivery and the acting skills lacked a lot that were unable to grab the applauses of the audiences.
