Two Delhi-based voluntary organisations have demanded a high-level enquiry into the alleged murder of a youth in police custody in Singrauli district between December 5 and 13 in 2013.
The voluntary organisations Pairwi and Delhi Forum formed a six-member fact finding committee headed by retired justice Panachand Jain, to investigate the matter.
While releasing the report published by the committee, Justice Jain told mediapersons that the judiciary should take cognizance of the matter and order a fair and high-level enquiry in the incident.
Notably, body of Singrauli resident Akhilesh Shah was found in a well on December 13. His family members had alleged that he was taken away by police on December 5
and excesses were committed on him.
They told the committee that the police were searching for one Vijay Shah in a petty case of diesel theft and in order to find him, the police caught Akhilesh and questioning him the whereabouts of Vijay Shah.
later, when the body of Akhilesh was recovered from the well, the police claimed that they had released him on the same day and Akhilesh might have died after having fallen in the well.
The committee members also alleged that cousin of Akhilesh, Sanjay was also allegedly tortured by the police for accepting that he had accompanied Akhilesh when he died.
After the incident, local residents started protesting against it. To control the mob, the police resorted to firing in which a youth Naqeeb Siduqie was killed. Besides, two minors had sustained minor injuries, the committee alleged.
